Before WWII, France ruled Vietnam. During WWII, the Japanese took over Vietnam. The leader of Vietnam was Ho Chi Minh. He created the Indochinese Communist Party in 1930, and their goal was to gain independence from foreign rule. On September 2, 1945, Ho Chi Minh declared the countries independence. The French then came into Vietnam and tried to restore French rule, and the 2 sides fought. By the end of 1945, the French regained the southern half of the country . The US aided the French by spending $1 billion on the war to help them.
